When a wealthy Swedish family celebrates the birthday of her patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, screams and whisper), the news about the outbreak of the Second World War reaches its remote Baltic island – and the happy mood becomes horror. The family climbs into a state of psychological devastation, which is excellently caused by Tarkovsky’s adhering palette of bright shades of gray, which wash the bleak landscape around their house.
